Hello Freshparents:

The long holiday weekend is quickly coming to an end and it’s time to focus again on a new week. I have several news items for you here – some are really new and some are reminders.

Spirit Week
Since we aren’t having Mid-Winter break, Newport will be celebrating “Stay”-cation week! Each day willing students and staff will dress up for something they might be doing if they were on break.

Tuesday: “We should be sleeping in Day” or Pajama Day
Wednesday: “We should be Skiing Day” or Snow Day
Thursday: “We should be in Hawaii Day” or Luau Day
Friday: “We should be in Disneyland Day” or Disney Day

Valentine’s Day Dance/Tolo Make-up Dance
The Valentine’s Day Dance is on February 20. Guest passes are available on the Newport website. They are due in the office by Wednesday, February 18. Tickets may be purchased this coming week.
Those who attended Tolo need to pick up a coupon for admission to the dance. If a student plans to take the same guest to this dance as s/he took to Tolo, the student will be able to get a coupon for the guest. If the student plans to take a different guest, s/he will need to get a guest pass from the website and have it turned in by February 18.

Spring Sport Packets
Spring Sport Packets are available for pick-up outside the ASB Secretary’s office. First time gray packets (if this is the first time your student has played a sport this year) and yellow “repeat” packets (if your student played a fall or winter sport this year) are due back by February 27, 2009.

Follies
Tryouts are coming soon – February 25-26 at 3:00 pm. Interested students should sign up for a time and pick up a packet in front of the ASB Secretary’s office. The performances are March 5-7. Any questions? See Mr. Richards or a student from the Technical Theatre class.

Computer Passwords
Students should be reminded that it's time to change their school password. Passwords not changed by March will no longer work. Students may do this on the library or classroom computers. Instructions are posted in each room.

Class of 2013 Mailing List
Do you have or know a student in the incoming Freshman class? Friends or neighbors bound for Newport? Make sure that we have your student's name and a parent email. Julie Rooney, NHSClass2011@gmail.com, is compiling the email list for the Class of 2013 Liaison. Please help us offer a warm welcome to all Newport students and families!

It is particularly hard for us to collect the names of students who are bound for Newport from private schools. If you have any connections with 8th graders in a private school, please encourage them to get in touch with Julie.

WSPTA's Focus Day – February 26, 2009
There's still plenty of time to register (it's free!) for this year's Focus Day to be held February 26 at the State Capitol in Olympia. The Rally for Basic Education Funding, to be conducted on the steps of the Capitol at noon, will be an great opportunity to remind our legislators of the importance of fixing the state's antiquated funding system for K-12 education, and we really need to have as many members with us as possible.
